A little bit about Ashbourne Shrovetide Football
The exciting, dramatic, chaotic event – which takes over the streets of the Derbyshire town (and the river!) – attracts interest from camera crews, photographers and journalists from across the globe.
Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football is a game played every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Unlike a conventional football match, the game takes place over two eight-hour periods, the goals are three miles apart and there are few rules. In fact, it’s nothing like a standard football match!
It takes place on Shrove Tuesday, March 5th, and Ash Wednesday, March 6th. The action starts at 2pm each day and the match continues until 10pm. If the goal is scored (goaled) before 5.30pm a new ball is released and play restarts.
Pretty much every fit and able man (and some women!) in the town who wants to join in joins the hug – the group of players jostling for the ball. There is no limit to the number of players who can take part. Your team depends on which side of the Henmore brook you were born on. Those born on the south side are Down’ards and try to goal the ball at the old Clifton Mill. Those born on the north side are Up’ards and try to goal the ball at the old Sturston Mill.
